Tiger Woods strengthens $67 million partnership with golf giant despite declining form

Two of the most influential people in golf, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, recently made some big statements that could impact the golf landscape. Rory McIlroy’s altered schedule and calls for PGA Tour reform

Rory McIlroy has announced plans to reduce his participation on the PGA Tour in 2025 in order to stay fresh for major tournaments. After playing in 26 tournaments last year, McIlroy plans to keep his schedule to around 20 events this season. He advocates for a more condensed PGA Tour season, similar to the NFL’s structure, to avoid oversaturation and maintain fan interest. McIlroy’s first appearance this year is scheduled for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

In the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL), an innovative indoor golf competition co-founded by Woods and McIlroy, Tiger Woods became the first player to break the league’s 40-second shot clock rule. This occurred during a match between Woods’ Jupiter Links GC and McIlroy’s Boston Common GC, resulting in a one-stroke penalty. Despite this setback, Woods’ team secured victory in a sudden-death pitch-off. TGL aims to modernize golf by bringing in six teams of elite PGA Tour players competing in high-tech, fast-paced formats that appeal to a younger audience.

On a lighter note, McIlroy humorously advised world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler to “hire a chef” after Scheffler injured his hand while making ravioli, leading to surgery and a delay in the start of the 2025 season. Both Scheffler and McIlroy are scheduled to return to competition at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
